I listened to it while driving throughout Oregon, and across Oregon into Washington, and past the boarder into Idaho, took down US 95, and eventually back to Oregon. The associations I had projected onto the song were ones of sitting on a city bus, watching trees go by; driving my car past rustling tall grass, while a pretty boy sits in the front passenger seat, windows cracked; Payette Lake lapping on sand while rain rattles the surface. I always though “July” was a song to drive fast or spontaneously make sun-rise-love to. And for the first two minutes, all was right.

The video was released today, nearly six months after the release of Youth Lagoon’s July + Cannons - EP (I first found the video on PrettyMuchAmazing.com: http://prettymuchamazing.com/videos/youth-lagoon-july). Despite the slowing down of the dramatic gestures and the dreamy, desaturated hues, the content is anything but placid. It rightfully reflects the eerie growth of Trevor Powers voice, ascending in passion until it climaxes around the three minute mark and your heart is beating so fast you want to cry. But the bleeds. Characters begin to die as they spontaneously bleed-out, intended to be caused by the moon’s presence - an “off axis orbit.”

Just as the video transitioned, as did my associations with it: from ease and light, came the night and nose bleeds. Since school began in September, I have found myself getting nosebleeds rather frequently, so often so that they no longer cause concern or work to warn me that something may be the matter. My decision to watch this feels like a cosmic reminder that I must return to that bleed-inducing stress - fit with late nights and orange lighting - in this upcoming week. It wasn’t a turn I wanted to follow from something I had filed away with sunlight and breathing easy.

I got a nosebleed under the read safety-lights once. I thought my insides were pouring out blackened.

Audio

Some Ideas

“Some ideas are more than just random moments of good inspiration. Some ideas become real whether you mean them or not.” - Kate Griffin, from A Madness of Angels

I have tip-toed on the edge and have finally elected to take the leap. My name is Amelia Marguarite Stier, and I am in my final year of my undergraduate experience. Come this June, I will have aBachelor of Fine Arts, and no idea what to do with it. This is the start of figuring out what I want from my life, and am grossly anxious, notably paralyzed, and yet intrigued by my uncertainty. Despite my optimism and romantic ideas of what it means to be young and passionate, I am creating a creative safety net: if all fails and my four years of college were the only time for me to devote to art, solely, than this public forum will hopefully ease the transition. I will funnel my need for art, music, and literature into the wire.

All shall work out.
